I've recently decided to commit myself to finally watching all 155 episodes of the 2nd Lupin III TV series (the "red jacket" one). This was previously impossible for me since fansubbers in the 90's hadn't subbed much of it, and I've just now found a torrent with all of it, and only half of the show has even been subtitled, so I'm basically downloading it in reverse and watching the raws right now. I started in reverse because some of the better quality episodes, in terms of animation, etc. seem to be in the last season.
Last night I rewatched the Miyazaki episodes for the first time in awhile (eps 145 and 155). I had never seen episode 145, Albatross: Wings of Death in Japanese before -- in North America, Streamline (a division of Orion pictures that released Akira in theatres) dubbed and released those two episodes as "Lupin's Greatest Capers" and you can probably find the VHS copy easily in a second-hand store. (I have it already but I see it around all the time.) To be honest, their dub wasn't all that bad, with the exception of Fujiko's voice which I really hated. I think they changed some of the music, too. They also dubbed the first theatrical movie under the title Mystery of Mamo which was my introduction to the franchise.

Anyway, I like to bitch about Miyazaki's version of Lupin and how it doesn't jive with the overall tone of the series or keep true to the characters, most notably the way Lupin comes off as overly chivalrous in Castle of Cagliostro (which is still one of the best animated films I have seen in my life) but after watching Miyazaki's episodes he did for the second series, I noticed that there were some things about his take on the characters that I liked that other directors didn't do:
( Thoughts on Miyazaki's Lupin )
I still wish Jigen could get the ladies for once -- in ep 129 he runs into a woman who's on the run from someone -- there's a coup d'etat going on in this South American country, I can't really tell what's going on exactly -- anyway, she gets shot in the leg and Jigen cuts the bullet out with a knife, then he's like "see you later" and just leaves. HE'S TOO HARDCORE HE DOESN'T HAVE TIME FOR WOMEN
Also, I finished the Irresponsible Captain Tylor TV series -- wow, it got really weird in the middle. I was really impressed with the animation quality; for awhile it was really impressive for a television series but it turned to crap around the 10th episode or so. Overall the show had very good production values. I'm not sure that I'm satisfied with the end, it was kind of a crappy ending and my ship didn't pan out. ;_; Yamamoto was my favorite character, I found him so endearing and almost cute, how he wanted to command his own ship so badly but he had to take orders from a total idiot the whole series. LOL

I saw this band open for Black Moth Super Rainbow in June. They put on an amazing live show, and were actually better live than BMSR. Yet, everyone who reviewed the show apparently didn't like them and the Nashville Scene likened them to a "Pure Moods" CD. But whatever, Nashvillians have no taste and are the worst crowds at shows; no wonder nobody wants to tour here.
Anyway, we finally bought this album, but I forgot all about it until Antony was doing his "Top 25 Albums of the Decade" and I discovered it shelved in with the other records, still in the shrink wrap. Oops

GOODBYE AUGHTS DON'T LET THE DOOR HIT YOU ON THE WAY OUT
I was conflicted on what to do for New Year's -- originally I'd made up my mind to see this 90's cover band at The 5 Spot (a bar in my neighborhood) -- this guy Dave that I sort of knew in high school is in the band and I haven't been out to see them yet, but when I rode my bike there, I found out the cover was $10 which I considered too steep, especially for a cover band. Sorry Dave. So I made my way out to Springwater to see Lone Official because that was my back up plan (I thought about turning around and taking the van but I was already on my bike, and I thought it might be safer than driving if I ended up drinking a lot). When I got there the place was packed, and it was totally not my scene (people in their late 30s and 40s, what). I left before the band I came to see even took the stage, even though I paid the $5 cover. I made my way over to The End on Elliston Place, which wasn't that far away, where there was another show going on, all Infinity Cat bands -- anyway it turned out to be free which was good. Caitlin was there but she was rolling, and like usual she disappeared after about ten minutes, after flailing around and knocking the beer out of my hand and then acting like she was going to let me take a cab with her and Dan and share the fare and share their champagne or whatever. But she ran off. Typical. Anyway, I stayed for a few bands but the crowd got a little too rowdy with their crowd-surfing and I decided my legs and knees had been bruised up enough so I stopped by Cafe Coco to say hi to Antony and get free coffee and then I rode home. I was hoping I'd see the FREE DRUNK BUS but I never did, not that I was drunk (I only had two beers all evening), but because I didn't really feel like riding all the way home. When I got home I realized how dirty my shoes and BRAND NEW JEANS were from the show, so I tried washing them in the sink, but even after all that scrubbing it looks like my hemp Chucks may never recover. ;_;
TL;DR Just like Halloween, New Year's SUCKED ASS and paled in comparison to last year, and just served as another reminder that I need to get out of this place ASAP.
ALSO I RODE TEN MILES
TEN FUCKING MILES

| Similar but different piercing question |
[31 Dec 2009|06:19pm] |
Thanks for all your replies yesterday. I also had another question I forgot to add.
What is the most economical (and yet clean, etc) piercing place around for a basic piercing?
I want to get my earlobes done again. Not a hard job. I would do it myself but already having them pierced I want to make sure it's even (and I am not sure I could get them even on myself). Anyone with a basic knowledge of sterile technique and universal precautions could do it. What is the most economical place for it?

Chicago was fun. Hung out with Paul and his friends most of the time. Kate and Austin's shindig was fun, but I don't really feel like I totally spent time with anyone but Robert and maybe Ted. Waking up in that tiny hotel room was super confusing though. Didn't know where I was. Also, I was proud of myself for getting from Glen Ellyn to downtown and back again. At one point I was kinda nervous, but I looked down the train car and there were two guys reading the Axis & Allies rule book and another reading Battle Royale. Comforting.
Avatar 3-D IMAX success on Tuesday night. I felt a little sick near the beginning. Don't sit in the third row. Elizabeth and I saw Up in the Air last night, which was good. One day I should update my movie review blog.
Christmas was good. Got some neat stuff including the bag of holding from thinkgeek, a Degobah frog terrarium, a gift certificate to Anthropologie, Special Edition Star Trek Blu-ray, etc. Made a good Christmas mix. Christmas party went well enough. Most of us spent our time standing around talking and laughing it up in the kitchen.Christi's boyfriend is a riot. BJ put both of us in his ugly sweater. A certain member of our party got plastered out of her mind for the first time ever. Whee! Over all, though, it wasn't very Christmasy, except for gift giving.
Need to find a ride to New Years festivities tonight. Should probably get that sorted out.

I have a D&D character to finish, a package to mail, and booze to buy. Happy New Year!

Anyone know of Nashville shops doing microdermal piercings?
Also who are your favorite piercers for more 'advanced' piercings?

Just finished the last of my Christmas cards. (And it's what, December 29th?) Anyway, they will go out in the mail tomorrow. Did everyone else receive their cards? Let me know -- I had one bounce back (it was addressed to my mother in law) so I'm a little paranoid about the post office delivering them.

I originally planned on doing a lot of things today, getting my pathetically late Christmas cards finished and out of the way (I've been the worst procrastinator all year long), sketching out some thumbnails for a few auto-bio comics I want to do for a mini-comic I'm planning... but in the end I was too sick to do anything all day. It wasn't that I drank too much last night (I was at Melrose Billiards for Olivia's birthday celebration get-together thing), it was that I was stupid enough to take my last antibiotic pill right before drinking, so that made me sick the next day. I was throwing up all day and had an awful headache and was generally not feeling well.
The other day the family and I (sans Caitin, she and Dan had to go somewhere) went to go see Sherlock Holmes. I went in with pretty low expectations, thinking it was going to be somewhat of a bad movie but in the end I actually enjoyed it. I think Jude Law is the best Watson ever. As far as RDJ as Holmes, I thought it was pretty good casting considering that Holmes is basically a professional asshole and has substance abuse issues (which surprisingly they only barely mentioned in passing once in the entire film) so it's basically Downey Jr. playing himself with a faked British accent. Of course, nobody can do a better Holmes than Jeremy Brett in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes tv series that I grew up watching on A&E (despite it being from the early eighties, it got re-runned quite a bit) that actually inspired me to read the original stories, so I wasn't expecting to be wowed by Robert Downey Jr.'s take on the character. I think they played up the neurotic side of Holmes too much, but I wasn't expecting the movie to be 100% true to the original Doyle version. I was pretty surprised that so many people were shocked by Holmes boxing in the movie -- it's like nobody read enough of Holmes canon to realize that he boxed, though I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Also, the music in the movie was pretty cool.
( More on the movie, with kind of maybe spoilers )
I have to admit that I am looking forward to all of the slash fiction/art/whatever that will result from the fandom surrounding this movie. I never shipped Holmes/Watson but given the homosexual implications of their relationship in this movie (and I have to admit that sometimes Holmes and Watson seemed like a genuine domestic couple) and Jude Law as Watson...
Also, IRON MAN 2 TRAILER YESSSSSSSS

Oh, and I almost forgot! I meant to post this special Christmas-themed FGF last night. Apparently it "may not be suitable for minors" -- I guess if you think lesbian cardboard reindeer making out with each other is somehow NWS, uh, be advised.
